How it works
Users with ADSL can have 2 concurrent VOIP calls, in addition to the normal
voice channel call. With SDSL or other connections with higher upstream
bandwidth, many more calls may be carried.
Users are provided with a SIP phone, which looks like an ordinary phone but plugs into at network (CAT5) socket.
It does not need to be attached to a PC, unlike services such as Skype.
Alternatively, you can use an ordinary telephone, plugged into an ADSL router that has SIP ports.
Each user is permanently assigned an 0845 number for incoming calls. The gateway to the public telephone
network (PSTN) uses an Asterisk soft switch ('virtual PBX') system.
VoIP services are dependent on a power supply and a working broadband service. Without these, you will not
be able to make calls.
The Phone Co-op does not pass on location information to the Emergency Services
and so we strongly advise that you do not attempt to use your VoIP service to contact the Emergency Services.
The Phone Co-op recommends that you maintain a standard telephone line in order to access the Emergency Services.
Call Charges
Calls to another VoIP user who is registered on our network are free of charge.
Calls to any other number are routed out of the SIP server to the PSTN and are charged at
our V Call Tariff rate.
